History
Canada’s use of Unertl sniper optics is tied to the C3A1 upgrade program (late 1980s onward). The Canadian variant was a fixed 10× Unertl, roll marked “C3 SNIPER”, with metric turrets. Earlier C3 rifles used the Kahles ZF69 6×42 (not Unertl). As Unertls aged, selected C3A1s received Mark 4 -16s replacements; later training rifles often appeared with Schmidt & Bender 3-12s after rail conversions.
Timeline
- 1970s–1980s: C3 (Parker Hale M82) in CAF service with Kahles ZF69 6×42 (no Unertl).
- 1988: C3A1 life extension/upgrade adds Unertl 10× “C3 SNIPER” (metric turrets).
- 1989–1991: Delivery frictions reported; some early rifles retained Kahles pending Unertl availability.
- 1990s–2000s: Sustainment period; limited Leupold Mark 4 -16s M1 used as replacement optics.
- Mid 2000s+: C14 Timberwolf (.338 LM) replaces C3A1 in frontline service; remaining rifles used for training; some refit with S&B 3-12.
